Beginner’s Guide to Mantra in Kundalini Yoga


Mul Mantra
Too busy, lazy, or intimidated to go to a yoga class?  You can get many of the emotional, mental, and spiritual benefits of a yoga class from listening to and singing mantra.

What is mantra?

Sound has a profound impact on our emotional and mental states. Ancient yogis understood the effect of specific sounds at a subtle and profound level and began using them as tools to achieve specific results: for everything from enlightenment and healing to prosperity and protection.   Just like nails on a chalkboard or a gentle, trickling stream, the sound of each mantra has its own, unique effect.

How does it work?

Every sound vibrates at a specific frequency that is absorbed by our minds and bodies.  After some time our minds and bodies begin to resonate with the sounds we are exposed to.  Furthermore, when we say mantras aloud, the movement of our tongue and vibration of our voice activates certain meridians on the roof of the mouth, which in turn affects the hypothalamus in specific ways.  If listened to or chanted repeatedly, you come to resonate that mantra and feel as though it is emanating from each of your cells.

Where do I find mantras?

www.SpiritVoyage.com is the largest source and resource for Kundalini mantra music.  Many of the more popular artists are also available on iTunes and Spotify.  See below for recommended music.

How do I use mantra?

Level I- little to no effort
You can benefit from mantra with little to no work on your part: just play some mantra music very lightly in the background.  You can even have it playing in your home or office while you are not there to set the vibration of the space for you.

Level II- some effort required
Want more of an impact? Turn up the volume and listen to the sounds.  Google the mantra to see exactly what the sounds are and start to sing along.  Be patient with yourself if the mantra is in another language; with consistent practice, you will be able to chant along in no time.   Find versions of mantras that are fun and feel good to you.  Listen while you drive or clean; turn on the mantras and dance around.  Let it be fun and joyful.

Level III- dedicate time and effort to the mantra
For the most impact, you can meditate with mantra.  Most mantras have specific meditations that can produce powerful effects in as little as three minutes.  These meditations usually involve specific postures and movements for the hands and eyes, while mentally or verbally speaking the mantra.  You can sign-up for our free 10-day meditation program, if you are interested in taking this step or click here to learn more).

Where to start?

The Mul Mantra is a great place to start.  The effect of this mantra is to get in touch with the Truth that we are all connected, infinite, and limitless. Don’t spend too much energy or get overwhelmed if the sounds are unfamiliar or you don’t “get” them right away, just let them permeate your body and space.
